I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend in some of the spiritual communities I visit.
After being led to a number of sites full of dubious, negative, or incredibly implausible (and unverified) claims, I was genuinely surprised to see how many people were taking these sources seriously. Seeing how many people are left confused and often troubled after reading these articles leads me to want to remind everyone how important discernment is when dealing with spiritual (or any) topics. Because spirituality is inherently personal, it is wise to never take what someone else says at face value unless it resonates with you. Even then, continue to question, evaluate, refine, and grow.
That said, here are some things to keep in mind while perusing articles and informational topics on spiritual matters:
— If the resource is claiming to value the Light but is focusing far too much on the Dark (“X is evil; Y will lead you to darkness; Z is manipulation from the dark forces!”), take it with a grain of salt. Messages from the Light will emphasize the Light, not the dark.
— Any resource that wants you to follow only the AUTHOR’S path or ideas is best avoided. Some people prefer dogmatic, rigid thinking, and will bring it into any realm of thought they subscribe to. But no one’s path is better for you that yours, and that is exactly what these authors want you to forget.
— Any resource that offers spiritual advice or information in the same fashion as an infomercial (“Pay now to get life-changing secrets that will solve your life problems in 30 days or less!!”) is a scam. True spiritual knowledge is free to everyone, period. (Now, those who charge for services or content are another story–just be careful when deciding whether they are worth trusting with your money!)
— If it sounds too fantastical to be true, it most likely is. The physical world is an amazing place, but it still has it limits! Also, check for verifiable sources to back up the incredible claims being made. If they have none, there you go.
Remember, just because it is being said within a spiritual community does not make it true. Always use your best judgment and decide for yourself what makes the most sense for you!
