Past life recall sounds like something only clairvoyants and practiced psychics can do, but the truth is, that’s not really accurate. I believe that we all have memories of our past lives, even if only on the cellular/subconscious level. For those of us who are ready to explore our soul’s journey, we can bring these memories to our conscious awareness. You may be surprised to realize you’ve been having memories all along and never knew it!
What qualifies as “past life memories” and how do we know we are having them?
– Mysterious ailments or lasting chronic conditions
– Phobias that don’t seem to originate logically from an event in this life
– Knowledge we seem to have that we didn’t formally learn
– Being drawn or repelled to certain eras, histories, places, people, things
– Having thoughts, feelings, and perceptions that don’t seem to come from whatever is going on
– Vivid, specific dreams that have a certain resonance to them
– Memories of events that couldn’t possibly have happened in our current life
-Telling our parents about our “old name” or “old parents” or “old house” when we were little
As I said, I believe that every single one of us experience past life recall because these memories are in our cells, they are a part of our soul, and we can’t help but carry those energies from life to life.
Many of us will “remember” in many ways throughout a lifetime and we will never recognize this consciously, let alone visually. That’s okay. Don’t think that just because you’ve never had a straight up memory in full blown cinematic detail that you won’t remember your past lives, or that you’re not able to remember.
Is time linear? Are we really having “past lives”?
Linear time is something that we experience and understand the world by. I use that terminology to describe the order of my experiences and to keep things ordered chronologically for my own sanity.
However, as I dig deeper, I start to find a more multi-layered story. I believe that I have had not one but several instances of what we’d call “parallel lives,” and believe me, that’s a strange realization. But if you think about it, the soul is so multi-faceted and exists on so many planes simultaneously that it kind of makes sense.
My personal belief, and others may differ on this, is that the soul experiences all facets of reality at once, and our conscious awareness is split in different directions. What we are doing when we are meditating is trying to tap into our wider consciousness. This is what’s called the “higher self,” the self that is aware of far more than we are. It is also how we are able to have parallel life experiences or how, when someone we know has died and reincarnated again, a part of them remains in the spirit world that we can access.
Is this for everyone?
What we encountered in past lives isn’t always easy to stomach, and it’s not for everyone. Sometimes people only need to know the bare minimum of what they experienced, and other times people are perfectly content on their spiritual journey without needing to delve into their past. But truthfully I think healing our past is an integral part of our spiritual journey and we will all be called to do it eventually. If not in this life than the next. That is why learning to remember past lives can be so helpful.
While digging out the deep stuff, you’ll come across some heavy memories. You’ll come across times when you had brutal things done to you or did brutal things to others. The things you fear the most deeply in this life have a precedent and you will begin to see why, when you’re ready. But take comfort in the fact that you will never remember what you are not ready to face. You’ll know the memory isn’t ready to come when you get a block, a blank spot, or nothing at all. Don’t push it, it will come when it’s ready and when you are strong enough to handle it. Be patient.
While doing this work it is best to have a strong base with your guides, your higher self, your deities, angels, or whoever you work with. I have also worked a lot with healing stones like rose quartz, amethyst, and lepidolite to help me work through some of the dark feelings and fears I’ve had. Some of us who are led to remember our past lives are doing so because we have very traumatic pasts to heal from (trauma often sticks in our memories the most vividly) so anything that eases anxiety such as herbs, scents, crystals, and meditative music is especially helpful.
If you are ever nervous, remember that this stuff already happened. You are here to heal and most importantly you are living your own story now. Spirit wants you to be released from your old pain, contracts, vows, hurts, and limiting beliefs.
How to remember your past lives:
Here’s a great way to start. Think of something you have been curious about for a long time.
It could be some chronic condition that keeps popping up that is confusing and unexplained. Or maybe a memory you have had that doesn’t fit into your life story. Perhaps it’s a relationship with someone you know, or something that keeps occurring in your life that you want to explore. Maybe it’s even a historical period or place you are fascinated with. Take that, and use that as a focus for beginning your past life exploration. Ask your guides to help you understand this thing and focus on bringing up a past life that is energetically affecting you now.
One way to do this is to visualize, in your sacred space, a book that represents your entire soul history, your Akashic Records. Imagine yourself walking over to it, asking about your particular focus, and then opening the book. Can you see anything? Do you get any images, any words, any feelings or thoughts or perceptions?
Another way is the movie theatre visualization. Imagine yourself sitting in a theatre with a big screen in front of you, and the screen allows you to pause, rewind, fast forward, and so on. Stare at the blank screen and ask to see an image from a past life that is affecting you now or that you are curious about. Be open and let the images come. You may not be getting movie quality stuff (I still get most of my memories in stills) but you are getting something. As you get better you’ll get more and more.
Something else that really works for me is to try to visualize what your body looked like. Some people suggest looking down at your feet and noting your footwear, but you can look down at your arms and the front of your body to see what you looked like and what clothes you wore. That gives you a starting place. From there maybe you can see surrounding details like scenery or buildings.
Some of us are more clairsentient or claircognizant than clairvoyant, so if you’re not much of a seer, try letting the knowledge come to you in your energetic body. Try feeling the information come to you and see if it makes sense. Some of us will just know or feel that we were in a certain place at a certain time, and that is just as valid. Trust that perception. Your assumptions about what it is or what it means may be inaccurate at first, but over time you will start to receive more pieces to your puzzle and it will start to come together.
If you are a person who can feel your chakras and energetic body (a useful skill to develop if you haven’t already) you can try focusing on an area that has been blocked or sluggish. A while ago I had a blocked area in my body that didn’t correspond to the location of any major chakras, and as I’ve been working on that area I’ve released a whole pocket of beliefs, anger, fear, sadness, and all sorts of things I’ve been carrying from a past life. Sometimes we hold old stuff in energetic pockets all over our body. Try working there and let what comes out be released.
Tools to remember past lives
One of my favorite tools to use for this purpose is pendulum dowsing. You can use your pendulum to ask yes or no questions about your past lives, and when you are ready you can start working with charts to get even more specific. I worked with a letter chart to ask my higher self and guides some of my questions. But you can get really creative with charts. Try dowsing over a large map to get a sense of where a life happened. Or, you can find charts that focus on certain topics like blockages and energetic information to learn about what issues you are facing because of a past life. The possibilities here are endless so you can really do just about anything if you’d prefer this method over visualization or are just seeking confirmation.
My other favorite tool is, of course, crystals.
My own crystal journey started off in the usual way: I looked up an ailment or spiritual need (dream awareness, pain relief, abundance attraction, etc.) and found which crystals corresponded to that need. As I collected crystals and got more in tune with their energy, I noticed that individuals spoke to me more meaningfully than “types” of crystals. What ended up happening is that, by holding a crystal and feeling its energy, I could have visions stimulated from that alone. It didn’t matter if the crystal was known for stimulating visions, psychic awareness, or past life memories. I’ve had this happen spontaneously with copper, ulexite, malachite, lepidolite, tiger’s eye, raw quartz I picked up from the ground…and so on. Crystals have the kind of energy that can propel you to the higher state of mind you need to be at to open to these visions or perceptions regardless of what type they are, but you may find that working with a particular type works best.
I’d suggest starting your crystal journey, if you feel so inclined, by going to a gem store or rock show and holding the pieces you feel drawn to. Doesn’t matter what type, doesn’t matter how tiny or how big, doesn’t matter if it’s rough or polished. Just get the one that calls to you.
However, if you want an idea of what crystals to look for that would aid past life recall or visualization in general, here is a list to get you started. These are ones that I’ve worked with but of course there are many more so find what works for you.
Crystals for general healing, balancing, and well being (important when doing this kind of work):
Quartz, Petalite, Herkimer Diamond, Amethyst
Crystals for releasing energetic blockages and working with the heart:
Black Obsidian, Rose Quartz, Lepidolite, Kunzite, Amazonite
Crystals for clairvoyance, visual awareness, and third eye work:
Blue Kyanite, Blue Apatite, Amethyst, Howlite, Selenite, Tektite, Unakite, Iolite, Azurite
I would suggest starting off by clearing, protecting, and aligning your chakras. It helps if you can be at a place of peace in yourself before you start digging into your past, although oftentimes we are led to our past because of trouble in our present. Take care to bring a calm mind to this pursuit so that you don’t interfere with the intuitive process and muddy the results. You want to be clear, objective, curious and open. Find crystals that can help you reach this frame of mind. You can also ask them to help you with the task of remembering your past lives.
Other tools that help:
I’m a huge fan of singing bowls. Crystal bowls are good (I have a third eye bowl that has helped me with visions) but Tibetan bowls are great too. Sound is a powerful way to tune your energetic body and stimulate your inner awareness. I would recommend trying to find one if you don’t have one already. They are awesome for a lot of things.
There are also many meditative tracks to listen to, some with binaural beats that can help you reach the mental state that is optimal for remembering past lives. Some organizations even offer guided meditations to help you visualize your past lives. I personally find these irritating and distracting but they work well for others, so try them out and see if they work for you.
Scrying (crystal balls, black bowl with water, scrying mirror) is another tool people use. It helps to relax your visual focus so that images and impressions can come through. Some people find that staring at a flame or visualizing themselves walking into a library or down a hallway has the same purpose. Other people prefer to let their mind go blank and let whatever comes appear to them. State your intention to receive past life memories and ask your guides to assist you. Most importantly, BE OPEN TO WHAT COMES. This is a creative process, and yes, your mind will generate images that to you seem irrelevant. This is all part of how visualization works and we are working in the realm of imagination, the subconscious, and the mind’s eye when developing these skills, so don’t let a few stray images and garbled visuals throw you off. Let them come.
You will know you are getting past life memories when you start seeing things so detailed and so specific that you can’t possibly have made it up, or the feeling is intense and unmistakable. Let the memory come, write it down, and then set it aside. After awhile, you’ll get some of the same things coming up again and again that you can use as a basis to build from. I look for consistency to tell me if I’m on the right track. If I see something that seems strange, out of context, or random and it doesn’t come up again, I file it away as a misfire and concentrate on the images I keep getting that are building into a cohesive story. Same with feelings and knowings.
So how did I get started?
I started off being curious. I wasn’t consciously seeing past life memories when I started (other than my spontaneous memories), but every night I set my intention, worked with crystals, dowsed, played my singing bowls, and focused on my goal. After awhile, my ability to see past lives consciously developed on its own while I was working on other skills.
Like everyone else, I can only see what I am ready to see. I am always surprised when I’m building a story based on what I’ve seen only to receive more memories with people I didn’t even know were there, or places I didn’t realize I was. It goes to show that you only get what you’re ready to handle, and nothing more.
Now, I put my crystals under my pillow or near my bed when I know I want to work with them. I tend to do my spontaneous recall right when I’m falling asleep or waking up in the early morning (I often wake up to them) so that’s why I have my crystals nearby. I also keep a few healing/protective stones to help me through the difficult memories I receive when they come.
I’m lucky in that visualization has always been a strong skill of mine, and there is something especially vivid about being able to see the memories for yourself. But, as always, there are many ways to remember your past lives so find the ways that work for you.
