So what are twin souls, exactly?
There’s a lot of confusion and conflicting theories about this subject, for starters! There’s also a lot of subtext (cultural, religious, and personal ideologies; social critique; and so on) going on behind the scenes of popular twin soul theories that makes the subject even more confusing. I’ve studied this topic with great interest and as such have picked up a lot of differing opinions, arguments, ideas, and experiences from all over. People who are going through this experience have a lot of good questions, and there are just as many people with answers. But not all answers turn out to be created equally. Many come from self-appointed authorities who actually have as much to go on as everyone else.
There are a whole lot of definitive rules on what twin souls (twin flames, twin rays) are and are not, but as I experience and learn and grow, I find these rules limit the scope of what this experience is actually about. So the more I personally learn, the less answers there seem to be, and the more my experiences seem to conflict with a lot of the common “rules” out there!
Here are my thoughts:
I believe that the soul is a unit of consciousness, infinite in its presence. I believe that God or Source is all consciousness; the consciousness of all souls (aspects of Source’s consciousness) together. Say that the soul is one individual color on the light spectrum, and Source is pure white, the combination of all colors at once.
As souls, we can choose to have experiences that may, for a time, seem to limit our scope of awareness. One such experience is to have a life in the physical realm, such as the lifetime we are living right now on Earth.
I believe our soul can inhabit many forms for the sake of its experience. Reincarnation is when our soul experiences other bodies, other time periods, other lenses of focus. Some argue that time, to the soul, is not linear and that we only experience it as such (past lives only seem such from where we stand relative to them in time; to the soul, all life experiences are happening at once). The more I learn and experience, the more I start to realize that what I have assumed to be true based on my physical perception really does tell only a tiny portion of the story. It may very well be that reincarnation and the path of the soul is more dynamic than we’ve been thinking of it as!
As our past life selves share our essence, our soul, and that essence is something we can recognize as ours, so too can we share an essence with another self living in the same time. The concept of parallel or simultaneous lifetimes suggests that you can have a lifetime not just behind you or ahead of you, but beside your current life. Say you were to meet this person.
This person would be you, your consciousness, albeit with a different lens, a different perspective, a different frame of reference. And just as you can see yourself reflected in your past (or future) selves, you can see yourself reflected in this person who shares the same time frame as you.
To take it a step further, I believe that twin souls are two aspects of the same consciousness, the same essential soul, and that these twin aspects are capable of experiencing each other, both in the physical and beyond.
Say your soul is the color green. You create green with equal parts blue and yellow. You could say blue represents one part and the yellow represents the other part, which combine together to form the color of the soul. Of course, we’re not talking about mixing colors like paint, or that each twin has a solely separate color without the other, but it helps to visualize the concept of two aspects forming one whole of something. One common way of describing it is the masculine and the feminine aspects of the soul, the yin and yang aspects. The soul contains all aspects together, but those aspects are capable of perceiving each other. It’s this perception that becomes our experience of the twin soul connection.
When you meet the other aspect of your soul in the physical (which is the case for most people searching for information on this topic), it’s a feeling of meeting the other polar aspect of your soul, yourself in another form. And the ultimate purpose of this, I believe, is to know Oneself.
So what’s the deal with twin souls?
I’m going to give some of my thoughts on the common questions and ideas regarding twin souls.
What are twin souls? Are they two souls, or one soul, or split souls?
I believe that twin souls are dual consciousness aspects of one soul. As such, I do not believe that twin souls are two souls split off from one soul at some point and that they are now wholly separated (even if consciousness is not focused on itself, it is still not a separate object from oneself), or two distinct souls that happen to share a matching or nearly matching vibration. Nor do I believe that twin souls are each half a soul, unformed without the other. We always carry wholeness within ourselves.
Are we incomplete without them?
No, because you are never truly without them. They are a part of you and you are a part of them, whether you experience each other in the physical or not.
Do we only meet our twin soul in the final incarnation once we’ve perfected ourselves and are ready to join?
This has not been my experience. You may meet your twin in the physical many times throughout your incarnate history, and each time I think the experience leaves a profound effect on you in some manner. Some say the goal is to remind ourselves Who We Are and lead us back to our higher awareness. The goal of meeting your twin soul may not be to come together in your particular life, nor is it an indication that this is your last lifetime and you are ready to ascend. Sometimes twin souls may like to touch base with each other in the physical during the midst of all the incarnate experiences they are still intending to have.
Are we meant to be together?
On a soul level, you are two parts of one thing, so you are always together in that sense. As for having a physical (often romantic) relationship? This may be the intention of your soul for this life but it doesn’t have to be. Just because someone is your twin soul does not mean you will be together romantically, or that this is even what you’re meant to do in this life!
Are twin souls rare?
I have no idea how “rare” it is to meet your twin soul in the physical. I know that people have done so throughout history, but at this time, we have more direct access to information, communities, and resources dedicated to the subject. It may give two impressions: that a lot of people are “discovering” their twin at this time, and that in the scheme of things it’s still a small number of people overall claiming to have this experience. People tend to extrapolate from that that many more people are discovering their twins at this time than any other time in history (when actually, all we have is more information and globally accessible sharing occurring now, thanks to the internet) and that it is a rare phenomenon (when actually, we have no way of knowing, testing, or verifying any statistics on how many people are or are not having this experience).
The short answer is this: I don’t believe this experience is particularly “rare” or only happens to a handful of souls. I also don’t believe any numbers, statistics, or the like being thrown around such as “1% of all souls are having this experience” (where did they get that number and what studies have been done to back that up?) I believe it is meant to happen to all of us at some point, though not necessarily at the same time!
Does everyone have a twin?
I believe that all souls have a dual aspect, a yin and yang aspect to their souls, so by nature I believe all souls are capable of experiencing their twin aspect in the physical and beyond.
Do I think all people, incarnate right now, have their twins simultaneously embodied in the physical? Not necessarily. In all my lifetimes I have only met my twin in a few of them. It’s been my experience that having incarnate lives together in the physical is not an every lifetime event, as it is not the soul’s goal to have a focus on one’s twin be the point of every lifetime. Although, as with everything, your mileage on this may vary.
I believe that all souls are capable of having this experience at some point, because the goal is to know oneself. Therefore, I don’t believe this experience is intended only for the initiated, the graduated, the advanced, or souls who have “chosen” to have this kind of experience.
How do I know if I’ve found my twin?
That’s a whole topic in itself! 🙂
